Weighing in on Whey by Scott Jameson

UPDATED 9/7/2008

The subject of Whey protein continues to be the bodybuilder's staple supplement. Without it, you starve your muscles after an intense workout. Pack the body with protein and watch the muscles recover and grow.

Bodybuilder Creatine Product

Whey protein is the foundation supplement among bodybuilders seeking to eat at least a gram of protein per pound of body weight. The only way this will happen is to supplement your diet with protein in some form. Enter protein powder and whey protein. For the purpose of this discussion, I am talking about 100% whey protein…not blends of weight gainer (disguised sugars).

I have been around long enough where protein was mostly made for soy beans and tasted like chalk dust from classroom. Today we have the advantage of protein concentrates made from milk. Little Miss Muffet must have been a bodybuilder since she ate her curds and whey.

I have tried many brand of whey protein and frankly I have been hard pressed to feel or find the gain differences from one whey protein to another. Maybe there are differences but I can’t objectively discern it. Sure I have found some taste better, some mix better but other than that NO DIFFERENCE.

By the way if you have objective data please email me at scott@bodybuildingprogramzone.com.

Here is the list of different whey proteins that I found good tasting as well as providing a high quality protein.

  • EAS 100% Whey Protein - SamsClub carries and has long been the place I have bought the most protein.
  • Dymatize Elite Protein Isolate - FitRX has run on special. They have a wide assortment of flavors. Butter Cream Toffee is a favorite.
  • BodyTech Whey Tech Pro 24 - Vitamin Shoppe house brand that is an isolate with great specs and can be a great price when on special. Banana cream is a favorite flavor here.
  • Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey
  • MRM Metabolic Whey
  • Champioin Pure Whey Stack

Though Whey isolate is touted as more effective for the body than concentrate, I frankly cannot discern the difference. If price is same I would choose the isolate. Okay call me a victim of the advertising folks.

If whey protein is protein and there really is no digestive difference and its affect on your body, why not buy the cheapest you can find? That said check the specs before you buy. Be sure you are not getting a lot of carbs and sugar mixed in. Check to be sure you are getting 22-24 grams of protein per scoop.

Places to check before you buy

Sam Club - A U.S. store but you can buy online.

Vitamin Shoppe - A U.S. store but you can buy online.

FitRx - Online only and huge selection of brands

Netrition - Online only and huge selection of brands
